On March 28, 2026, at the Sitia Municipality Multicenter, the ceremony for the proclamation of Professor Emeritus David Holton of the University of Cambridge as an honorary citizen of the city took place.<\/div>

The decision was unanimously taken by the Municipal Council, following a proposal by the VITSENTZOS KORNAROS SHELTER, in recognition of his significant contribution to the research and promotion of the work of Vitsentzos Kornaros and Cretan literature.<\/span><\/span><\/div>
<\/div>
The event featured brief interventions by Maria Vlassopoulou, Konstantinos Giavis, Tina Lentari, and Tasoula Markomichelaki, his former students, whose doctoral dissertations were prepared under his supervision. <\/span><\/span><\/div>

This was followed by a response from the honoree. <\/span><\/span><\/div>
<\/div>
David Holton is Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge and is considered one of the most important scholars of \u201cErotokritos.\u201d In 2019, he was honored by the Region of Crete for his contribution to Cretan studies, and in 2024, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Department of Philology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Under his supervision, numerous doctoral dissertations were prepared, contributing substantially to the formation of a new generation of researchers dedicated to the study of Cretan literature. Through his teaching and scientific work, interest in Erotokritos was transferred and established in university institutions in Europe, America, and other countries, giving the work international prominence and recognition. Professor Holton’s international prestige decisively enhanced the scientific study and appeal of Erotokritos, highlighting not only its literary value but also its creator and place of origin. In this way, he contributed significantly to the promotion of Sitia, which is internationally recognized as the birthplace of one of the most important poets of the Greek Renaissance. His contribution, therefore, transcends the boundaries of academic research, as he played a crucial role in the preservation and international promotion of Kornaros’s work, while also serving as a substantial ambassador of Sitia’s cultural heritage and strengthening its position on the global cultural and scientific map. <\/span><\/span><\/div>

Brief Biography of Professor David Holton <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>
<\/div>
David William Holton was born in Northampton, England, in 1946. He is Professor Emeritus of Modern Greek Philology at the University of Cambridge. He studied at Northampton Grammar School and then at Hertford College, University of Oxford, where he specialized in Classical Studies and Medieval and Modern Greek Language and Literature. In 1971, he completed his doctoral dissertation (DPhil) at the University of Oxford, focusing on Modern Greek philology. From 1973 to 1975, he served as a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. At the same university, he also worked in administrative positions until 1981, gaining valuable experience in the operation of higher education and university research. In 1981, he was elected Lewis-Gibson Lecturer in Modern Greek at the University of Cambridge, and in 1982, he became a Fellow of Selwyn College, one of the university’s historic colleges. His academic progression was continuous and exceptionally successful: in 2000, he was promoted to Reader, and in 2006, he was elected Professor of Modern Greek. During his long academic career, he taught and inspired generations of students, while also developing significant research work, with particular emphasis on Cretan Renaissance literature and especially on Vitsentzos Kornaros’s work Erotokritos, contributing decisively to its scientific study and international recognition. He retired in 2013 and has since held the title of Professor Emeritus, continuing to be one of the most recognized personalities in Modern Greek studies internationally. <\/span><\/span><\/div>
