A Greek poet, one of the leading figures of the Cretan Renaissance. He is identified as the son of Iakovos Kornaros and Zampeta Demetzo. He was born in Trapezounta, Sitia, in 1553 and was the scion of a Hellenized Venetian family. After 1590, he settled in Chandakas (present-day Heraklion), where he married, had two daughters, and held administrative offices. His brother Andreas, also a writer, had founded the Stravaganti Academy of Scholars there, of which Vitsentzos also became a member. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

His most famous work is the 10,012-line poetic novel Erotokritos. It was first printed in Venice in 1713. Some scholars attribute the religious drama The Sacrifice of Abraham to Vincenzo Cornaro. The poet died in Chandaka in 1613 or 1614 from unknown causes and was buried in the monastery of St. Francis. <\/p>

Vitsentzos Kornaros was a member of the Hellenized Venetian-Cretan Kornaros family of Sitia and Chandakas. Son of Jacob (1514-1553) and Zampeta (=Elizabeth) Demetzo (+1599), he was born in the village of Trapezonda in Sitia on March 26, 1553. He was orphaned by his father and, a few years later, needed a sworn examination to certify his noble ancestry and be recognized as a nobleman. While his older brothers Ioannis-Fragiskos and Andreas had settled in Chandaka before 1570, Vitsentzos lived for many years in Sitia, managing his family’s estate, which included several fiefdoms and mansions. During these crucial formative years, Vitsentzos developed a mindset rooted in Greek life and tradition and acquired a spiritual culture that enabled him to meet the demands of writing a work such as Erotokritos. <\/p>

During the Venetian-Turkish conflict (1570-1573), Vitsentzos moved to Chandaka, now Heraklion, for safety. We find him again in the same city in 1578 and at the end of 1580, taking part in the Council of Nobles and Feudal Lords. In May 1581, he is recorded as being in Sitia, while on January 10, 1582, he had returned to Chandaka and assumed the duties of supervisor of morals with significant judicial and police powers. He then returned once again to Sitia. At the end of the same decade, Vitsentzos was living permanently in Chandaka, undoubtedly due to his marriage to Marietta Jeno on September 8, 1590. From his marriage, he had two daughters (between 1594 and 1600), Katerina and Eleneta, who, when they married, received dowries consisting of houses in Chandaka and estates outside the city. From 1591, Vitsentzos regularly participated in the meetings of the Council of Nobles of Chandax, was repeatedly elected representative of this body before the authorities, and assumed various public offices. At the same time, he joined the inner circle of the Academy of Stravaganti, of which Andreas was the lifelong president and whose members included well-known figures of Venetian-Cretan society. <\/p>

In 1593, he is referred to in sources as a health supervisor and chief inspector of the district of Pediada. These were the years when Chandakas and the wider region were ravaged by a major plague epidemic, and Vitsentzos carried out his duties while most nobles and bourgeois had fled to the countryside to avoid falling victim to the plague. (…) From 1593 to 1608, he held various public offices, while in between periods of private life, he traveled to Sitia to monitor the condition of his real estate and to settle his own and his family’s financial affairs. Vitsentzos died between August 12, 1613, and April 24, 1614, and was buried in the Catholic monastery of St. Francis, next to his wife Marietta. <\/p>

It took the poet several years of painstaking effort to compose Erotokritos: he completed the work in its initial form in Sitia after his return in 1583 and continued to work on it in Chandaka, where he settled permanently, but also in Sitia, where he traveled from time to time for the needs of his estate. The final version of Erotokritos was completed in Chandaka after 1601, when, among other things, he worked in detail on the second and fourth parts, narrating the war between the Athenians and the Vlachs, and added the autobiographical epilogue. <\/p>

(\u2026) Erotokritos was read in a refined circle of scholars in Chandaka, of which the poet was a member. At first, knowledge of its existence was limited due to the large size of the work and the poet’s ongoing intensive editing of the text. After its completion, the story of Erotokritos and Aretousa was circulated as reading material within this same circle, which was also in a position to finance the production of a lavishly illustrated manuscript of the work, a distant echo of which is his unfinished seven-island copy. <\/p>
