Even the difficulty in classifying Erotokritos as a literary genre rather confirms that it is a unique turning point in European letters, an unclassifiable literature. The ‘verse romantic novel,’ based on the prevailing definition by St. Alexiou, simultaneously encompasses a harmonious blend of philosophical, ethical, political, and social perspectives.

The Neoplatonic pursuits of the members of the Stravaganti Academy, with which Kornaros was associated, likely influenced his work. The heroes strive in the arena of moral virtues, control their passions, and achieve recognition with the help of ‘unblemished friendship’ and unwavering devotion to the pure and the ideal. Specifically, Erotokritos matures and changes in exile. Losing his beauty and eloquence, he is freed from the external characteristics that make him attractive and relies on his bravery and generosity (saving the king who exiled him). With self-denial, he does not hesitate to face death in order to defend what duty dictates. The hero who, through separation, wandering, adventures, and spiritual ordeal, reaches a kind of spiritual perfection, is connected with the Platonic quest for a supreme model of ethical behavior that leads to happiness. However, he is also connected with the Aristotelian ‘entelechy.’ Furthermore, the role of nature in Erotokritos acquires interesting dimensions. The presence of the Sun and Stars, the constantly present natural forces, the glow of fire that draws the soul to destruction but also to catharsis, all constitute Platonic echoes.

Could it be that in the music, which serves as the means for an ex auditu love to materialize in this work, we can detect the Pythagorean concept of cosmic harmony? Erotokritos’s songs have a therapeutic function, and Aretousa relies on them to infer the quality and moral superiority of their unknown creator. From the perceptible, she infers the supersensible, as if the direct analogy between microcosm and macrocosm described by Pythagoras holds true.

Contemporary research, introducing new perspectives and approaches to the work, also focuses on the influence of Epicurus, which may have reached Kornaros through Lucretius. The profound contemplation on ‘the nature of things’ and the variability of life permeates the entire work: servitude, poverty, and wealth come and go, leaving the essence, the truth of things, unaltered.

Nevertheless, the poetic horizon of Erotokritos encloses a profound humanism that expresses both the quests and the intellectual struggle of Renaissance man, as well as the open character of Greek culture, remaining simultaneously a learned and popular work, with characteristics of a folk song. Personal virtues, individual choices, and human free will against the constraints of social conventions form the European-humanistic identity of the work. In the Renaissance of Crete and Kornaros, however, liberation coexists with moderation, because its values were bipolar; they had acceleration, but also brakes, prudence.

Even for the Renaissance era, Aretousa’s central position in the work is pioneering. She, mistress of herself, takes all necessary initiatives to meet Erotokritos and to formalize their relationship. She is tormented, humiliated, and imprisoned as she resists not only social conventions or paternal desire but primarily the violence of authority. Alongside her, Erotokritos struggles against himself, initially suppressing his feelings, until he finds the strength to define himself and claim happiness. The multidimensional struggle for self-determination finds its best expression in the struggle of the two young lovers.

Could there also be a political interpretation of Erotokritos that perhaps constitutes an answer to Machiavelli’s The Prince, where hegemony is gained without ‘treachery,’ in opposition to the Machiavellian tenet that the end justifies the means?

The poem’s many perspectives demonstrate the richness of its meanings and its intrinsic power. Perhaps this is why every reader can form a personal relationship with the poem, connect it with their personal experiential horizon, and ultimately ‘read’ it differently—as a love story, as a heroic epic, as a didactic narrative, as a philosophical reflection.

Philosophy and Readings Αρχική Σελίδα The conception and original handling of Erotokritos’ material create a broad field for interpretations and reflection.
