Erotokritos, a popular work, circulated in manuscript form throughout the 17th century. Today, the only surviving copy is the Ionian manuscript from 1710, which is available digitally in the Harley Collection of the British Museum Library (see the catalog entry, the manuscript text, and 19 selected illustrated pages). In 1713, Antonio Bortoli produced the first printed edition of the work in Venice; three copies of this edition survive, and since then there have been many reprints of the original edition.
The first thorough literary approach to the work was made through the critical edition by Stefanos Xenoudidis in 1915 and is now available from the Digital Library of Modern Greek Studies of the University of Crete “Anemi” (see the recording and the text). The result of the editing of the first Venetian edition was the philological edition by Georgios Savvidis in 1998, which is digitally accessible from the non-profit public benefit organization Spoudastirio Neou Hellenismou (see the digitized text).
