Calendar 2023
This year’s edition of our calendar combines paintings (egg tempera on wood) by Giorgos Kordis (www.kordis.gr) with quatrains from Erotokritos that correspond to the theme of each painting. There is a permanent exhibition of copies of the paintings at the Stegi.
I tackled many of the secrets of the heart with Erotokritos and asked to make paintings based on this masterpiece. And I called these images collectively "visual awareness." With this name, I wanted to show that my painting does not aim at representation, nor at illustrating the text with a faithful rendering of the characteristics of Kornaros' era.
I focused, of course, on recording only some of the events narrated by the poet and did not attempt to shape or describe emotions.
I moved freely without constraints and without seeking to establish a specific form for the "heroes" of the work.
I framed my images with a brown-black border and engraved the central theme on top of it, creating forms that refer, at least in terms of color, to red-figure and black-figure ancient vases. In this way, I attempted to creatively blend ancient vase painting with Byzantine iconography and engraving with egg tempera.
