One year after the death of ophthalmologist Giorgos Markakis (1929-2021), the Lychnostatis Museum—which he founded—and the Vitsentzou Kornaros House honor his memory by co-publishing and presenting his new book, From Alpha to Omega: Anestorimata Broka. The book includes two short stories from the unpublished material in the literary and folklore archive of the deceased.
The hero of the stories is the renowned mantinadologist of Tourloti, Sitia, Giannis Reizakis-Brokas (1880–1973). On the occasion of his meeting with the daughters of the folk poet, the author refers to Brokas’s metrical will as an example of folk wisdom that contains, in simple and idiomatic language, the sociological context of that era on the subject of inheritance and dowry.
In the second—and longer—story, G. Markakis recounts Broka’s measured romantic confession to his beloved, which—as it takes place in her absence, but publicly in the village café—takes the place of a serenade in absentia and an inventive oral romance.
