From the back cover of the book
The journey of a family in Crete before and after the Italo-German war. Four women, four stories, and five men. Mother Avgenio takes on matriarchal burdens and anxieties. A sick jealousy incites internal tremors and nurtures monstrous instincts. Tragedies and calamities bring upheavals and change ways of life and behavior. A sea adventure, a ship, and a shipwreck. The war of ’40 brings two strangers to the front who have something in common but don’t know it. During the German occupation, the two women play a significant role in the resistance. And finally, the ordeal, ingratitude, and tragic revelation. Will catharsis ultimately occur? All this in a vivid dialectical language where image converses with the sound of words and dramatizes…
Biography
Anna Takaki-Markaki was born and raised in the mountainous village of Ziros and resides in Sitia.
Her first contact with writing came in 2001, capturing memories of the past, personal experiences, and small stories of her homeland on paper. In 2004, she published her first poetry collection, “Chroma Thalassino” (Sea Color), sharing her experiences from transatlantic voyages as a companion to her naval husband. Since then, she has published 12 more poetic and prose works, mainly ethographies, and has been writing for the local press for many years. Her poems are included in poetry anthologies and Cretan albums.
Her ethography “O Koumartzis” (The Gambler) has been adapted into a theatrical play and performed by students of the 1st EPAL Chania at the Avgorou Technical School in Famagusta.
Most of her works are written in the local idiomatic language, with which she grew up and was nurtured, leaving a linguistic legacy of our culture that is tending to disappear.
