On Sunday, May 11, 2025, the Reading Club of Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS met to discuss Pavlos Matesis’ novel “The Mother of the Dog” (Kastaniotis Publications). This is a seminal work of Greek literature, awarded and widely translated. It was first published in 1990 and currently numbers fifty-five editions.
The heroine narrates her life in vivid language, alternating between humor and sarcasm, and tragedy and tenderness.
The topics discussed included the struggle for survival in a provincial village just before World War II and during the Occupation, destitution, social and personal ethics, public shaming and what we mean by this term, the presence-absence of the homeland and the church, the unfavorable position of women, etc. Situations of that era were paralleled with contemporary ones.
The next meeting was scheduled for June 15. The book will be selected by vote.
